Shop Local Day 14: SPECIALTY
We all know the fisherman, the hunter, the runner… But where do you find gifts locally for people who enjoy the outdoors?
Most communities have stores that you don’t even turn your head toward, unless you are looking for them specifically. So I suggest you ask around, drive slowly or ask your friend or family member what their favorite store is. (Some of these individual shops are too small or specialized to have more than a listing on Yelp).
Morgan’s Ace Hardware in Woodstock is one of the oldest businesses in town, opening as “Morgan Brothers” in 1939 (it became
Morgan’s Ace Hardware in 1961). They carry everything from paint and hardware to lawn & garden supplies, tools, pet supplies and more. We’ve purchased everything from mulch and edging supplies to a fantastic wooden patio swing. Plus, they carry Christmas lights, decor and gifts. And if you’re looking for some fun gifts for folks with an affinity for the outdoors, try a tent, a glider or a fire pit! (The most thoughtful gift my family ever gave me was an assortment of garden tools that they had purchased from Morgan’s).
My husband has an affinity for fishing, and he wakes before dawn several Saturdays each year to join friends for a long trip down the Chattahoochee in a float and waders to try his hand at landing a couple of trout (catch and release, of course). Alpharetta Outfitters on South Main Street carries equipment and gear for the hobby fisherman or the die-hard, plus they offer lessons and guided tours for those who want a new challenge or to improve their skills.
For those who like to pound the pavement and get jazzed wearing t-shirts from their most recent 5- or 10-k race, apparel or running shoes are a little tougher to purchase, since proper fit is essential. But a gift certificate for proper running shoes doesn’t have to come from a big-box store. Natural Strides opened in September in Downtown Woodstock, and they specialize in barefoot style footwear. I was thrilled to learn that they carry Merrells, easily the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn for running or for
everyday wear.
Remember that your gifts don’t have to be expensive to be impressive. Shopping local while giving a gift that your friends or family will truly appreciate and enjoy is priceless!
